Feeding Flake, Frozen, DIY, and live foods are accepted. Vegetation should be a large part of their diet.
Usual Swimming Level(s): Mid to Lower Levels
Temperament: Aggressive towards its own species.
Basic Care: A large well planted aquarium with plenty of hiding places should be available; however small to medium aquariums have been used successfully.
Reproduction: Every 55 to 60 days 20 to 50 fry are born. They should be given heavy plant cover or removed from their parents upon birth.
Remarks:
Chapalichthys Encaustus is commonly known as the Barred Goodeid. They are commonly found in Lago de Chapala, Jalisco, Mexico where they inhabit open waters and heavily planted inbankments.
Encaustus is easily kept in larger planted aquariums with a Neutral pH, and a varying temperature upto 72*F.
In their natural habitat they are said to eat mainly live foods, including insects that land on the water. Flakes will be accepted readily.
Birthing of ten to fifty 15mm fry will occur 55 to 60 days after fertilization. Older parents will chase after young, however the fry can sucessfully be raised with the parents if sufficent plant cover is provided.
Encaustus is rarely seen in the hobby. Along with the natural color form, there is an albino strain of Encaustus which is even more rarely seen in the hobby!
