Ameca: Ameca Splendens - Butterfly Goodeid |
|
Ameca Splendens is commonly kown as the Butterfly Goodeid. They can be found naturally in the Rio Ameca and Rio Teuchitlan, east of Ameca, Jalisco, Mexico.
Splendens are generally brown with silver fanding to white on their stomach. The flanks of the males include scales that reflect yellow, blue and green. Males are easily distinguishable by their dark lateral line and the caudal fin that is edged in yellow with a black band behind it. The males will grow to a length upto three and half inches, where the female can reach four and a half inches.
The Butterfly Goodeid prefers 60-82*F hard alkaline water. A large well planted tank should be used, as they will eat many types of algae. Some people use them in place of Algae Eaters. Algae will be happily accepted as a treat, and is recommended for a balanced diet. Live, Frozen and Flake foods will be accepted, vegetation should make up a large part of their diet.
Breeding is easy with the right conditions. Gestation takes 55 to 60 days, normally 5 to 30 fry are born depending on the size of the female. Fry do not need to be removed from the parents tank, as they are rarely bothered. The Fry, as many goodeids may have an umbilical cord, as it will disappear within a short amount of time.
